Use of a metal detector on the beach?

My fiancee is starting a new hobby. We were wondering if using a metal detector is allowed on the beach. He would not use it intrusively, and there isn't noise because of the use of a headset. We just don't know if it's allowed and would not want to do the wrong thing.

hmm, not sure that I have ever seen one of them in Jamaica.

He might have a difficult time explaining this to customs??? You would pay the bag fee to take this with you?

I'm not thinking I want someone poking around all day with a metal detector. Its a private resort.

There have been other threads on this question and I'm sure they are "allowed". Here is my response from the past.

I hope my opinion doesn't offend you but having someone walking around the beach with a metal detector beeping is not what I was hoping to see on a romantic Caribbean beach designed for couples. I guess I associate metal detectors with the crowds, commercialism and hustle bustle of DE and NJ beaches. With that said, I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch if you found joy walking around looking for pirate treasure.

I think I would be more interested on getting it on the plane! I have never seen it used in Jamaica . But just so you know, they do rake the beaches evy day.

There's no rule against it, but I would have to think there are better uses of his time in Jamaica! Plus, it's one extra thing to lug down there.

I have been in the hobby for years and been going to couples for years also, never took mine. I have never seen anyone use one there but do no the resort has one to find guests lost items, I would not want to have to worry about it being stolen as its not going to fit in the room safe, and if I did find something (ring ect.) it would only be proper to turn it in to lost and found anyway(at couples were all family) that being said, go and enjoy your trip together, thats a treasure all its own

I see people using them with headphones these days, so no noise issue if that is the case. I would be too busy doing nothing though.

I am all for enthusiasm about hobbies, but I can't see it doing much for the Couples ambiance.

7 mile beach is a long beach and you don't have to dig too deep. I think this is a perfect beach to bring it to, it's your hobby, and if you enjoy it, it's legal!

mjd, You've seen an actual full-sized metal detector there?
We've seen the E.T. team go get a handheld wand (from the security officer at the employee gate - picture additional hands-on screening at airport security) when a guest loses a ring during beach volleyball (an amazingly common occurrence).

But that was just a small wand (and not all that effective if the ring is more than 1/2 inch down in the sand).

My hubby recently got one and has yet to use it. BUT...if he suggested he would bring it to Couples on our vacation, I might be finding me a new vacation partner!

If you enjoy this activity then by all means go for it! As for it not being within the Couples Ambiance how is it any different then a beach volley ball game?

Maybe they like doing it together as a couple?

^This was exactly what I was going to say.

I don't know much about using a metal detector but with them raking the beach daily it would seem rather pointless to me, but to each their own.

If your husband found something of interest or value, what could he do with it? What are the laws in Jamaica about treasure trove? I would hazard a guess that he might find the odd ring, a few coins, bottle tops and other paraphanalia but is this really the point of detecting? Would whatever he finds be his to keep? If he found a ring, would he really want to keep it anyway? If you were asking specifically for my opinion then my answer would be to leave it at home and enjoy your Couples time.

While the beaches are public, they are so only up to the high water mark - Commonly referred to as The Queen's Chain.

The rest of the beach is considered private property.

I would hope that anything of value, for example, jewelry, would be turned in to the guest services desk.

Rudy I think it was 3 years ago that we saw a staff member at cn with a metal detector looking for someones lost ring at the volleyball court, as I stated it being the resorts metal detector I dont no that for sure, just no a staff member was useing it.

Thanks to those of you who read and replied with thought rather than those whose remarks were more along the edge of insulting. This was an honest, fair question, and was set to imply the hobby would not be used intrusively. Treasure hunters love finding things and seeing them reunite with the one who lost it when ever possible.

My favorite beach time activity is to search for shells. I'm glad my sweetie doesn't mind and isnt looking for a new vacation partner due to my hobby.

Saw one last year at CSS and found it irritating. Thought it a bit cheeky, why oh why would you want to do this at such a great resort? Chill, relax and enjoy you can do this at home. If it came near me I would not be very happy. I am on holiday to enjoy Ja not go metal hunting.
